# METADATA Data Description:
#
# ABSTRACT:
# The report authors maintained notes detailing the process that
# was used to do the analysis for this report. The pertinent
# notes were included in the appendix of the report.
# Some details that did not warrant publication reside
# in these notes. These notes are being archived in the
# event that they might be of use to future water-use
# efforts aimed at stream-valley aquifers.

 NEW YORK DOCUMENTATION
Last edited: August 3, 2006

The New York Department of Health, Bureau of Public Water Supply Protection was the source for public water-supply data for the calendar year 2000. The Bureau has information that includes: the public supplier name, city served, primary water source, average daily population, average daily withdrawal in gallons per day and latitude and longitude of the well or intake. Crop irrigation source agencies include the U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service, and Cornell University, Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering. Industrial data was obtained from Harris InfoSource and Planning and Management Consultants, Ltd.

In 2000 total water ground-water withdrawals in New York was approximately 893 Mgal/d. Ground-water withdrawals in the categories of public supply, self-supplied industrial, and irrigation are 751 Mgal/d, 84 per cent of total ground-water withdrawals. In 2000 no withdrawals were assigned to the alluvial aquifers category. The Other aquifer category totaled 25.2 Mgal/d, representing approximately ten per cent of ground water withdrawals from the three categories. Self-supplied Industrial was the source of most of the withdrawals attributed to the Other aquifer (15.8 Mgal/d). Public Supply was the second major source of water assigned to the Other aquifer category (9.2 Mgal/d).

Half of Long Island, New York is south of the southern limit of glaciation as shown on figure 9, in segment M of the Ground Water Atlas of the United States. As this area is blanketed by coarse-grained, stratified outwash deposits, alluvium cannot be differentiated from the underlying material. In the western part of New York, two counties contain areas south of the limit of glaciation. The two counties are: Cattaraugus and Allegany. In Allegany County the area is so small that identification of stream-valley aquifers would be difficult. Cattaraugus County has the Allegany River entering from Pennsylvania and then leaving the county to the south, making a half circle. Along this river, wells withdrawing water for public supply are located. The well data, population served data, and New Yorks per capita water use coefficient was used to estimate 2000 stream-valley aquifer withdrawals for public supply in Cattaraugus County. Corresponding well construction information was not available for the categories of self-supplied industrial and irrigation, so estimates of water use could not be made for these two categories.

In Cattaraugus County, total withdrawals of 4.07 Mgal/d were assigned to the Allegany stream-valley aquifer, all of which were attributed to public supply. Within the County, alluvial aquifer withdrawals that could not be disaggregated totaled 6.05 Mgal/d; 3.37 Mgal/d attributed to public supply, and 2.68 Mgal/d attributed to self-supplied industrial. All of the 25.2 Mgal/d of withdrawals assigned to the Other aquifer were produced as a residual computational value when total State withdrawals were split among principal aquifers.
